What is the Camp Lejeune Water Lawsuit About?

Camp Lejeune is a military base in North Carolina. It serves as a temporary residence for Marine Corps members and their families. It can accommodate as many as 170,000 people.

Contaminants were found to be present in the water between 1953 and 1987. It is unclear how the contaminants got into the water, but they may have been sourced from a nearby dry-cleaning facility.

People living at the base suspected contamination and warned officials of the issue on several occasions, but no action was taken.

What Contaminants Were in the Water at Camp Lejeune?

Four different contaminants were found in the water in connection with the Camp Lejeune drinking water lawsuit. These include:

  • Benzene: An industrial solvent commonly used to manufacture plastics and a known carcinogen.
  • Trichloroethylene: A solvent used in the manufacturing of chemicals and consumer products.
  • Vinyl Chloride: A chemical used to manufacture cars, pipes, and plastic products known to cause nerve damage, weaken the immune system, and decrease bone strength.
  • Tetrachloroethylene: This dry-cleaning agent and solvent that can be found in a variety of consumer products.

Who is Eligible to File a Camp Lejeune Drinking Water Lawsuit?

The following people are eligible to file a Camp Lejeune water lawsuit:

  • Military members
  • Veterans
  • Family members
  • Contractors
  • Reservists
  • National Guard
  • Others working on the military base

Anyone living or working on the base for at least 30 days between the years of 1953 and 1987 will be eligible to file a Camp Lejeune contaminated water lawsuit if they can prove that they acquired a medical condition because of the water exposure.

What is the Camp Lejeune Justice Act?

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act is a pending law that provides cash compensation to people who developed a medical condition due to Camp Lejeune water exposure.

In the past, veterans could collect disability if diagnosed with one of eight diseases linked to the contaminated water. Military members and their families could be covered for health care expenses to treat these diseases. But the victims could not collect cash damages.

The act would remove legal barriers preventing victims from getting cash compensation. It would eliminate barriers such as the North Carolina State of Repose while creating a jurisdiction to adjudicate claims in the United States Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. It also waives sovereign immunity, which prevents citizens from suing the government.

While the law is not yet in effect, lawmakers are working to get it passed quickly.

I usually never leave reviews, good or bad, but for this instance, I most definitely had to. David and Marnie were both AMAZING. They made me feel comfortable and confident in their ability to resolve my case. I was walking in a crosswalk and was hit by a vehicle resulting in having to go to the hospital. I sustained injuries from this that I am still in the midst of dealing with. I contacted the firm and was able to speak with them via zoom immediately. I decided to sign with them on a Monday evening (3 days after my accident) and by Tuesday afternoon (the very next day) my case was settled. And settled for the very max that was able to be obtained. I attribute a lot of this to not only the expertise of the firm, but the relationships that Marnie has built with her experience working as a lawyer within a major insurance provider, which just so happened to be the insurance provider involved in my case. This is incredibly atypical for a case to be settled this quickly, especially with this outcome. It has been two weeks to the day today that my accident has happened and my case has already been resolved. I am blessed and more than happy that I decided to hire this firm. Every case is different, but I can bet that this firm will handle your case with care and the utmost professionalism. I pray I never have to go through a situation like this again, but if I did, I wouldn’t hesitate to call this law firm. Thank you guys very much!!
